Santiago, Chile - In addition, 13,000 adherents of Greenpeace have asked the President to fulfill his campaign promise. And the number keeps rising.
Nearly 3,000 people marched through downtown Santiago to protest the approval of the thermoelectric Barrancones in the Coquimbo region, after the Regional Environmental Commission [COREMA] of the IV region approved by 15 votes to four against the construction of two coal plants to 21 miles south of the Humboldt penguin reserve.
All votes were trusted officials of President Piñera, as the mayor of Coquimbo, Sergio Gahona addition to the governors and regional Seremis. While the four regional directors, three of opposition and a ruling-opposed.
President Piñera still out to this public pressure. Only through the Minister of Government spokeswoman, Ena Von Baer, noted that "there is an ongoing institutional thermoelectric approved, but are hard to audit, which does not harm the environment."
Greenpeace last week has developed a cyber where Sebastian Piñera requires the President to fulfill his campaign pledge in which he said would not approve any project that harms the environment, natural heritage and quality of life for Chileans. Until this afternoon more than 13,000 people have demanded the President to turn against power plants, and point out what their government is doing to stop the serious impact that this approval is on an area rich in biodiversity, a leading worldwide.
To Samuel Lewis, a spokesman for Greenpeace in Chile "These demonstrations and the high number of electronic mailings show that Chileans do not want that electric power is generated with coal."
Greenpeace and many other environmental NGOs and people in the civilian world committed to the environment that refuse to approve Barrancones thermoelectric project because it could irreparably destroy Nature Reserves Choros-Damas Island, Penguin Island and Humboldt Chañaral and affect to thousands.
